A cotton robe takes the iron-on backing without any trouble. Most store-bought costume robes are polyester or satin, and those will scorch or glaze before the adhesive ever activates — sew the crest on instead. If the costume goes back in a box and comes out again next year, run a stitch around the border regardless; a year folded in storage is hard on adhesive.
