Where they go on a costume

Real flight suits put the flag on the left shoulder and the NASA insignia on the left chest above the name tape. For a costume nobody is checking regulations, but that layout is what people recognise from photos, so it is the one to copy. Kids' costumes: same placement, and the smaller NASA patch scales down better than a large mission patch would.

Fabrics they bond to

Cotton and cotton-blend jumpsuits and coveralls, denim, cotton canvas, cotton costume pieces. Heavy cotton is the most forgiving — it holds heat evenly and the patch does not shift while you press.

Fabrics to sew instead

Most store-bought astronaut costumes are polyester or nylon. Nylon melts under an iron; polyester can glaze. If the label says either, sew the patches on — it takes ten minutes and outlasts Halloween by years. The same goes for coated or waterproof shells, leather, faux leather and vinyl.

Applying them

Press the area flat. Position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and apply firm steady pressure with a dry iron — no steam. Let it cool completely before moving the garment; the bond sets as it cools. Do one patch at a time. On anything washed regularly, run a stitch around the border too.

Care

Inside out, cold, gentle cycle, tumble low or hang. No bleach — it dulls the gold first. Iron from the reverse only.
