Where the square format helps
Rectangular flag patches want a horizontal run: a sleeve, a chest panel, a bag face. A 3-inch square is more flexible. It centres on a cap front, fits a shirt pocket, and stacks in a grid alongside other square or round patches without leaving awkward gaps. If you are building a layout of several patches, squares and circles are the easy shapes and rectangles are the ones that fight you.
Fabrics that take the adhesive
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Heavy cotton and denim are the most forgiving — they hold heat evenly and the patch stays put while you press.
Fabrics that need sewing
Nylon, polyester shells, coated and waterproof outerwear, leather, faux leather and vinyl all fail under a hot iron. So does anything with a printed graphic beneath it. Polyester needs a cooler setting, a pressing cloth, and a test on an inside seam before you commit to a visible panel. Caps are their own case: a flat-front cap can be pressed carefully, a curved or foam-front one should be sewn.
Applying it
Iron the area flat, position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and press with firm steady dry heat. Let it cool all the way down before the garment moves. Stitch the border on anything worn and washed weekly.
Care
Inside out, cold, gentle cycle, tumble low or hang. No bleach, no fabric softener. Iron from the reverse side only.
