The same lightning bolt, about 3.5 inches across, but set on white rather than red. It is the higher-contrast of the two, and the one that works when the garment is already loud — on a red jacket, a printed shirt or a busy patch layout, the white ground gives the bolt an edge to sit against instead of competing with what is underneath.
Choosing between the two
On denim, black or any dark solid, both versions read well and it comes down to taste. On red, maroon or a heavily patterned fabric, take the white one — the red version loses its outline against a warm background. If you are building a layout with several patches, the white ground also gives the eye somewhere to rest.
Placement
Circular, so rotation does not matter. About the width of a credit card: right for a chest panel, a sleeve, or the flat front of a bag. The white ground shows dirt more readily than the red version does, which argues for a chest or sleeve over a bag bottom.
Fabrics that work
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Heavy denim is the most forgiving of all — it takes heat evenly and does not shift under the iron.
Fabrics that need sewing
Nylon, polyester shells, coated and waterproof fabric, leather, faux leather, vinyl, and anything with a print underneath. On polyester, use a cooler iron and a pressing cloth, and test a hidden seam first.
Applying and caring for it
Flatten the area, position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and press with firm dry heat. Leave it until it is completely cool. Wash inside out, cold, gentle, dry low or hang — and be stricter about bleach here than you would with a dark patch, since it will discolour the white ground before it does anything else.
