The Texas Lone Star flag, embroidered at about 3.5 by 2.5 inches: a single white star on a blue vertical band, with white over red at the fly. It was adopted by the Republic of Texas in 1839, and it is probably the most recognisable state flag in the country — most people can draw it from memory, which is a rare thing.
The most wearable state flag
Three fields, one star, no seal, no lettering. It reads correctly at any size, on any ground, from any distance. If you are starting a state-flag collection on a jacket, this is the one that will still look right in five years.
Where it bonds
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Denim is the natural home — it holds heat evenly and the patch stays put while you press.
Where to sew
Nylon, polyester shells, coated or waterproof outerwear, leather, faux leather and vinyl. Work shirts are often a poly blend — check the label, and stitch if in doubt.
Applying it
Flatten the area, position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and press with firm dry heat. Let it cool all the way down. Run a stitch around the border on workwear and anything washed weekly.
Care
Inside out, cold, gentle cycle, tumble low or hang dry. No bleach, no fabric softener.
Questions we get
Which way should the star face? Blue band at the hoist — the left edge as you look at it.
