The Tennessee state flag, embroidered at about 3.5 by 2.5 inches: three white stars inside a blue circle on crimson. The three stars stand for the state's three grand divisions — East, Middle and West Tennessee — and the designer's own note said the circle binds them together, which is why they sit inside it rather than in a row.
Why it reads well as a patch
A circle containing three shapes is about as legible as flag design gets. There is nothing here that depends on fine linework, so the design survives at patch size intact — unlike the many state flags that are a detailed seal on a plain field.
Surfaces that take the adhesive
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Denim presses most reliably.
Surfaces to sew
Nylon, polyester shells, coated or waterproof fabric, leather, faux leather and vinyl. Polyester needs a cooler iron, a pressing cloth and a hidden test seam first.
Application
Iron the area flat, position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and press with firm steady dry heat. Cool completely before moving the garment. Stitch the border on anything washed weekly.
Care
Inside out, cold, gentle, low tumble or hang. No bleach, no fabric softener. Press from the reverse only.
Questions we get
Do the three stars mean something? The state's three grand divisions.
Will it fit a sleeve? Yes — 3.5 by 2.5 sits comfortably on an upper sleeve.
More states? State flag patches.
