The South Carolina state flag, embroidered at about 3.5 by 2.5 inches: a palmetto tree and a crescent on a deep blue field. The crescent is taken from the silver badge worn on the caps of Revolutionary militia; the palmetto comes from the palmetto-log fort that absorbed British cannon fire on Sullivan's Island in 1776.
A design built for small
Two white shapes on a solid ground is close to ideal for a patch. There is no seal, no lettering, no gradient — just silhouette, which is the one thing embroidery does better than print. This is among the cleanest state flags we stock at this size.
Fabrics it bonds to
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Denim is the most forgiving surface; cotton canvas is a close second.
Fabrics to sew
Nylon, polyester shells, coated or waterproof outerwear, leather, faux leather and vinyl. Uniforms are frequently polyester — stitch those, and confirm any placement rules before attaching anything permanently.
Applying it
Press the area flat, position the patch, cover it with a thin cotton cloth, and apply firm steady dry heat. Let it cool completely before the garment moves, then stitch the border on uniforms and heavy-use gear.
Care
Inside out, cold, gentle cycle, tumble low or hang. No bleach — the white palmetto shows it first. No fabric softener. Iron from the reverse only.
