The Ohio state flag, embroidered at about 3.5 by 2.5 inches — and cut to the flag's real outline. Ohio's flag is a swallowtail burgee, the only non-rectangular state flag in the country, and this patch keeps that shape rather than squaring it off into a rectangle like most versions do.
Why the shape matters when you apply it
A swallowtail has two points and a notch, and those points are the weak spot. On a rectangular patch the whole border takes strain evenly; here the tips carry it. Two consequences. First, press the tips deliberately — they are the first thing to lift. Second, if the patch is going anywhere that gets snagged, brushed or packed, stitch those two points even if you skip the rest of the border.
Fabrics that take it
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Flat surfaces — the notch does not sit well over a seam or a curve.
Fabrics to sew
Nylon, polyester shells, coated or waterproof fabric, leather, faux leather and vinyl.
Application
Iron the area flat. Position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, press with firm dry heat, and give the two tips extra attention. Cool completely before the garment moves.
Care
Inside out, cold, gentle, hang or tumble low. No bleach, no softener. Iron from the reverse only.
Questions we get
Is it actually swallowtail-cut? Yes — not a rectangle with the shape printed on it.
Will the points lift? Not if you press them properly and stitch them on high-wear items.
