How to apply

Place the patch, cover it with a thin cloth, press firmly with heat, then let it cool before handling. For heavy wear, bags, or textured fabric, add a few stitches around the edge.

The New Mexico state flag, embroidered at about 3.5 by 2.5 inches: a red Zia sun symbol on a yellow field. The symbol comes from Zia Pueblo, adapted for the state flag in 1925, and the four groups of four rays are the reason this design reads instantly even at small size.

The simplest flag to wear

Two colours, one centred symbol, no lettering and no seal. It is the closest thing in the fifty states to a logo, which is why it works on things most state flags do not — a cap front, a shirt pocket, a small bag panel — where a busier flag would turn to noise.

Fabrics it bonds to

Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Denim and heavy cotton press most cleanly.

Fabrics to sew

Nylon, polyester shells, coated or waterproof outerwear, leather, faux leather and vinyl. Caps are their own case: flat-front only for pressing, and even then carefully. Curved and foam-front caps should be sewn.

Applying it

Press the area flat, position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and apply firm steady dry heat. Let it cool completely. Stitch the border on anything worn daily.

Care

Inside out, cold, gentle cycle, low tumble or hang. No bleach — the yellow ground is the first thing it will affect. No fabric softener.

Questions we get

Will it fit a cap panel? Yes, and the centred symbol makes it easy to line up.
