A Ghostbusters-style glow patch, built for the one night of the year it exists for — and useful well beyond it on a jacket or a bag. It reads as a normal embroidered patch in daylight and comes into its own once the lights drop. The patch measures about 3.5 inches across, with an iron-on backing.
Charging it before you go out
This matters more for a costume than for anything else in the catalogue, because a costume patch is usually under a porch light or nothing at all. Give it a few minutes directly under a bright lamp before you leave, or leave it in a sunny window during the afternoon. It charges through nothing but open air — a patch that spent the day inside a bag will not glow, and one covered by a jacket flap will not either.
The glow is at its brightest in the first minutes after a charge and fades gradually. Outdoors, away from street lighting, with eyes adjusted, it holds up well.
What to press it onto
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas all bond properly. A cotton boiler suit or work shirt — the obvious costume base for this design — is ideal.
What to sew instead
Cheap costume fabric is the trap. Thin polyester, satin, anything with a coating or a printed graphic, plus nylon, leather, faux leather and vinyl: these glaze, scorch or melt before the adhesive is ready. Sew those, or use fabric tape if the costume is genuinely single-use.
Pressing
Iron the area flat, position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and press hard with dry heat. Do not move it until it has cooled all the way down. If the costume is going back in a box and coming out again next year, stitch the border — adhesive alone does not enjoy a year folded in storage.
Care
Inside out, cold, gentle cycle, low tumble or hang dry. No bleach.
Questions we get
Will it glow all night? No patch does. It is brightest right after charging and fades from there; a top-up under any bright light resets it.
Can I take it off after Halloween? Only cleanly if it was sewn.
Does it need a black light? No — ordinary light charges it.
