Surfaces that work
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Heavy denim is the most reliable of all — it takes the heat and the patch does not shift under the iron.
Surfaces that do not
Nylon luggage, polyester shells, coated and waterproof fabric, leather, faux leather and vinyl. Sew those. Football shirts are performance polyester and will glaze permanently under an iron — if the patch is going on a shirt, it needs stitching.
Applying both
One at a time. Press the area flat, position the patch, cover it with a thin cotton cloth, and apply firm dry heat with steady pressure. Cool completely, then measure from a fixed point — a seam or a cuff — before placing the second.

Inside out, cold, gentle, hang or tumble low. No bleach, no fabric softener.
