A Darth Vader helmet stitched in glow thread, roughly 3.5 inches square — large enough to work as the single statement piece on a jacket back panel, small enough for a chest placement or a backpack front. In daylight it reads as an ordinary embroidered patch. In the dark it does something else.
Charging the glow
Glow thread is phosphorescent: it stores light and releases it slowly. Give it a few minutes under a bright lamp, or a shorter stretch in direct sunlight, and it will be at its brightest immediately afterwards, fading gradually from there. It needs a clear line to the light source — a patch tucked under a coat will not charge, and neither will one that spent the day in a bag.
Where it goes
Cotton, cotton-blend and denim jackets are the natural fit, and heavy denim is the most forgiving surface of all: it holds heat evenly and does not shift while you press. Cotton canvas bags work. Cotton costume robes and capes are fine.
Where to sew instead
Skip the iron on nylon, polyester shells, waterproof or coated outerwear, leather, faux leather and vinyl — the fabric fails before the adhesive reaches temperature. Do not press over an existing printed graphic. Polyester costume fabric is the common trap around Halloween: it is often cheap, thin, and will glaze under a hot iron. Sew that.
Pressing it
Iron the area flat first. Set the patch, cover it with a thin cotton cloth, and press hard with a dry iron, holding steady rather than sliding. Do not move the garment until it has cooled all the way down — the bond forms during cooling. On a jacket you wear regularly, stitch the border afterwards.
Care
Inside out, cold, gentle, tumble low or hang dry. No bleach, no fabric softener. Iron from the reverse side only, never across the patch face.
Questions we get
How long does it glow? Brightest for the first several minutes after a good charge, then fading. In a fully dark room with adjusted eyes it stays visible far longer than it does in a dim one.
Can I put it on a costume for one night and reuse it? Only if you sew it. Ironed-on patches do not come off cleanly.
Does washing kill the glow? No. The pigment is inside the fiber.
