A Chicago city patch, about 3.5 by 3 inches. City patches earn their place on two things: a travel jacket that collects the places you have actually been, and a bag that quietly says where you are from. This one is sized for both — big enough to read, small enough to sit alongside others.
Building a city collection
If Chicago is going to be the first of several, think about the layout before you press anything. City patches look best in a run — a sleeve, a column down a placket, or a grid on a back panel — and they look accidental when scattered. Leave a patch-width of space between each one so the collection can grow without crowding. It is far easier to add a fourth patch to a planned row than to move the first three.
Fabrics it bonds to
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Denim jackets and cotton totes are where most city patches end up, and both press cleanly.
Fabrics to sew instead
Nylon and polyester travel jackets are the catch — packable shells are almost always synthetic and will mark under an iron. Sew those. Same for coated fabric, leather, faux leather, vinyl, and anything printed.
Applying it
Flatten the area with the iron, position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and press with firm dry heat. Let it cool completely. Travel gear gets handled hard, so stitch the border once it is placed.

Inside out, cold, gentle, low tumble or hang. No bleach or softener. Iron from the reverse only.
