The California state flag, embroidered at about 3.5 by 2.5 inches — the grizzly, the single red star, the red stripe and the words "California Republic". It is one of the busiest flags we stock at this size, and the bear is what decides whether a patch of this design works or not.
Detail at 3.5 inches
A walking bear in profile plus lettering is a lot to ask of a patch the size of a credit card. Ours is embroidered rather than shrunk-down print, which keeps the bear's outline legible — but it is worth knowing this is a design that rewards being looked at close up rather than read across a room.
Fabrics that work
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Denim is the most reliable; heavy cotton canvas is a close second.
Fabrics that need a needle
Nylon, polyester shells, coated or waterproof outerwear, leather, faux leather and vinyl. Polyester needs a cooler iron, a pressing cloth and a hidden test seam.
Applying it
Flatten the area, position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and press with firm steady dry heat. Cool completely before the garment moves. On anything washed weekly, run a stitch around the border.
Care
Inside out, cold, gentle cycle, low tumble or hang dry. No bleach — the white ground shows it first. No fabric softener.
Questions we get
Is the lettering readable? Close up, yes. It is embroidered, not printed.
