The Alabama state flag, embroidered at about 3.5 by 2.5 inches: a crimson cross of St Andrew on white, which is exactly how the state code describes it. It is one of the plainest state flags in the country, and that plainness is why it holds up as a small patch — there is no fine detail to lose.
Where it works
A 3.5-inch rectangle wants a horizontal run: an upper sleeve, a chest panel, the face of a bag, or a row alongside other state flags. Collectors building a fifty-state jacket usually run them in rows down a sleeve or across a back panel, which is worth planning before the first one goes down.
Fabrics it bonds to
Cotton, cotton blends, denim and cotton canvas. Denim is the most forgiving surface: even heat, no shifting under the iron.
Fabrics to sew
Nylon, polyester shells, coated or waterproof outerwear, leather, faux leather and vinyl. Uniforms are often polyester — sew those, and check any placement rules before attaching anything permanently.
Applying it
Press the area flat, position the patch, cover with a thin cotton cloth, and apply firm steady dry heat. Let it cool completely before the garment moves. Stitch the border on uniforms and heavy-use gear.
Care
Inside out, cold, gentle cycle, tumble low or hang. No bleach, no fabric softener. Iron from the reverse only.
